Hybrid thermal and cold energy storage using phase-change materials (PCM)
The project is co-funded by the European Union under the European Funds for a Modern Economy programme — Measure 2.28 Acceleration programmes (Smart UP Path), delivered within the KPT ScaleUp Booster acceleration programme run by Kraków Technology Park.
The aim of the project is to develop and validate a modular energy store based on phase-change materials (PCM) at the technology recipient — the TAURON Group. The free-standing unit is connected as a parallel secondary buffer to the building's existing installation, without interfering with the chiller's primary loop.
The project covers the development and validation of two complementary energy-storage prototypes: a cold store and a heat store, both based on phase-change materials (PCM), with an in-house control and measurement system.
The store multiplies the system's energy capacity within the same plant-room volume, cuts compressor starts by 60–80% and enables operation under dynamic tariffs. The project covers the installation concept (KM1), prototype construction and laboratory testing (KM2), and installation plus validation at the technology recipient (KM3). The results will serve district-heating and energy operators, equipment manufacturers and owners of public-use buildings.
